Spend to Save
I purchased The Criterion Collection’s edition of The Third Man on DVD at the recommendation of the lads at Grammarporn, my favorite elitist pop-culture net community. I have never seen this film, and buying films I know only by reputation is not something I make a practice of. Usually I have to see a film two or three times before I can tell if I want to own it.
But I had this coupon, see… So I went looking for the most expensive DVDs that I was interested in buying, ’cause if they cost more, and I used the 20% off coupon, then I saved more. Right?
Sort of. I picked up The Ususal Suspects Special Edition, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas and Criterion’s The Third Man, at $20, $25, and $30 respectively. At 20% off, that means they cost only $16, $20, and $24 each, saving me $15. I spent this “saved” fifteen dollars on a copy of Twelve Monkeys, thus effectively getting a free DVD.
So I got four DVDs for the price of three. Except all of those DVDs were pretty expensive, and I don’t like to spend more than $15 on a DVD if at all possible. So, from that perspective, I got four DVDs for the price of five.
I’m still trying to figure out if I won or not.
